Ever wonder what happens when all the power and communications go down in your area? Amateur radio operators can provide invaluable services to any community that needs them. This September marks the 75th Anniversary of the national American Radio Relay League, “Amateur Radio Emergency Service” (ARES). In order to celebrate the Portsmouth chapter of ARES (PARES) is going to have a “celebration event” on September 14, 2010.
The Portsmouth chapter of ARES was also founded in the month of September in 1980, thus making the same month the 30th anniversary for Portsmouth ARES founding. Both anniversaries will be celebrated together. PARES is a non-profit, all volunteer service that provides emergency communications during disasters such as hurricanes, flooding, tornados, etc. They are all volunteer amateur radio operators that are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission and utilize their skills and personal equipment to provide this free service to the community in time of need. They also provide communications services to local charity events in order to maintain their skills and work for worthy causes.
For more information on attending, please contact Ken Murphy, Assistant Emergency Coordinator for Operations with the information provided below:

Section Manager Carl Clements and I are pleased to announce a couple of new appointees that have stepped up to take on duties as ARES emergency coordinators for local jurisdictions. These folks are:
Tom Azlin, N4ZPT, EC Fairfax, District 2
Chris Walker, KJ4QZB, EC City of Richmond, District 6
Fred Weaver, KG4BKI, currently serving as the EC of the City of Franklin has taken on the additional responsibility of Southampton as well in District 10
We all thank you so much for stepping up and volunteering to fulfill this emergency coordinator positions. The local EC is the cornerstone of the ARES operation as this leader is “the” local supervisor and the person who knows your jurisdictions unique requirements better than anyone else.

Back to the Beach in 2010
The Virginia Beach Hamfest is back - and better than ever! This year, the VBHamfest has a new venue - the Virginia Beach Convention Center, located at 1000 19th Street in Virginia Beach, VA. The event will be on September 11, 2010, and doors open 9 AM to 5 PM.
The Convention Center features over 37,000 square feet of vendor space. The organizers, Tidewater Radio Conventions, Inc. (TRCI), are committed to ensure that this is a grand event, with a goal of being the largest hamfest in the state! The event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with lots of vendors, tailgating, food and drink, and activities for the XYL and kids. In addition to ham gear, there will be lots for electronics and computer hobbyists as well.
License exam sessions? There are four sessions to fit your schedule. What about forums? Lots of them, including two with Kay Craigie N3KN, President of the ARRL. How about a DX dinner? You can join the other DXers for a social hour and dinner with three menu choices at Mahi Mah's on the oceanfront (but be sure to get your tickets in advance!).
Even the website is awesome! Check them out at www.vbhamfest.com for details or for online ticket sales.

Mark Lindsey, KD6AKC, has accepted appointment as the Emergency Coordinator (EC) of Fauquier County in District 2. With a strong interest in ARES and emergency communications, Mark brings a great level of enthusiasm to the position and was highly recommended by ASEC 2-4/DEC-2 Howard Cunningham, WD5DBC. "It is fortunate that we have people like Mark willing to step up and take on additional Responsibilities, said Cunningham, "and we know he will do an excellent job." The Section Manager, Carl Clements, W4CAC, Section Emergency Coordinator, Joe Safranek, K4JJS, and all of the members of VA ARES wish Mark well in his new position. |
